Absorption

In humans, peak concentrations occur in about 1 hour. Food can delay, but not affect the extent of, absorption.

Distribution

In cats, volume of distribution is 0.26 L/kg. It is 93% bound to human plasma proteins. Brain levels are approximately 10% of those found in plasma, explaining its non-sedating nature.

Metabolism

It is a human metabolite of hydroxyzine.

Elimination

In cats, clearance is about 0.3 mL/L/minute. In humans, approximately 80% is excreted in the urine, primarily as unchanged drug.

Overdose

Cetirizine generally has a wide margin of safety.

  • Massive Overdose: May cross the blood-brain barrier in overdose situations, leading to neurologic signs (hyperactivity or severe sedation).

Tablets should be stored at 20-25Β°C (68-77Β°F); excursions are permitted to 15-30Β°C (59-86Β°F). The oral syrup may be stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
