Overview
Imidacloprid is a widely used topical ectoparasiticide for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations in dogs and cats. It is available as a sole agent or in combination with other parasiticides such as moxidectin, permethrin, or flumethrin to broaden its spectrum of activity against ticks, mites, and endoparasites.
WARNING: Combination products containing permethrin (e.g., Advantix) are highly toxic to cats and must NEVER be used on them.
Clinical Pearl: For optimal flea control, the concurrent use of an approved insect growth regulator (IGR) and environmental management is highly recommended. All in-contact animals should be treated simultaneously.
Mechanism of action
Imidacloprid acts on the central nervous system of insects. It binds to post-synaptic nicotinic acetylcholine receptors → causes continuous nerve stimulation → results in paralysis and death of adult fleas and their larvae.

Contraindications
- Unweaned puppies and kittens <8 weeks of age (sole agent)
- Kittens <10 weeks or puppies <7 weeks of age (flumethrin collar)
- Pregnancy and lactation (flumethrin collar)
- Cats (permethrin combination products)
- Kittens <9 weeks or <1kg, puppies <7 weeks (moxidectin combination)
Adverse effects
- Transient pruritus at application site
- Erythema at application site
- Salivation (if ingested due to bitter taste)
- Transient lethargy
- Agitation
- Inappetence
Precautions
Environmental Toxicity: Imidacloprid and its combinations are dangerous to aquatic organisms and birds. Treated dogs should not swim in surface water for at least 48 hours after spot-on application, and collars should be removed before swimming.
Feline Safety: Ensure cats do not groom dogs recently treated with permethrin-containing combination products.
Avoid applying the product to damaged skin. Prevent the animal from licking the application site until dry.

- Application: Apply the spot-on liquid directly to the skin at the base of the skull/back of the neck where the pet cannot lick it off.
- Bathing/Swimming: Do not allow dogs to swim in ponds or rivers for at least 48 hours after application, as the drug is highly toxic to fish and aquatic life. Remove collars before swimming.
- Safety: The product tastes very bitter; if your pet accidentally licks the wet application site, they may drool excessively for a short time. This is usually harmless and resolves on its own.
- Household Warning: If using a dog product containing permethrin (e.g., Advantix), keep treated dogs separated from cats until the application site is completely dry, as permethrin is deadly to cats.
