概要
ピコリン酸クロムは、特に猫の糖尿病や肥満の補助治療として使用される微量金属の栄養補助食品です。臨床的な有効性には議論があり、犬の糖尿病には有用ではないとされています。サプリメントには生物学的に活性な3価クロム（Cr III）が使用されています。
作用機序
Chromium is an active component of the glucose tolerance factor (GTF), a complex of molecules including glycine, glutamic acid, cysteine, and nicotinic acid.
While its exact role in carbohydrate and nitrogen metabolism is not fully elucidated, it is thought to enhance insulin receptor sensitivity and facilitate glucose transport into cells.
- GTF → Insulin Receptor Binding → Enhanced Intracellular Glucose Uptake
- It does not lower blood glucose levels in normal, healthy patients.

- Renal insufficiency (use with caution)

- Cognitive, perceptual, and motor dysfunction (reported in humans receiving the picolinate salt)
注意事項
Renal Insufficiency: Chromium supplements could potentially exacerbate renal insufficiency; use with caution in these patients. Behavioral Alterations: Because the picolinate salt can potentially alter behavior, consider using chromium chloride or chromium nicotinate in patients receiving SSRIs or other behavioral therapies. Pregnancy: Use cautiously in pregnant animals, especially cats, as they may receive much higher dosages than human equivalents.

薬物動態
吸収
Poorly absorbed from the GI tract. When given as a salt (picolinate, chloride, nicotinate), lipophilicity and solubility are increased, enhancing absorption.
消失
Most of an oral dose is excreted in the feces. Absorbed chromium is eliminated via the kidneys.
過剰投与
Little information on acute overdoses is available. In humans, there are case reports of women developing renal failure after taking excessive doses of chromium picolinate.
