개요
카올린(Kaolin)은 개와 고양이의 비특이적 설사 치료에 사용되는 흡착성 지사제입니다. 위장관 내의 수분과 잠재적인 독소를 결합하여 대변의 굳기를 개선하는 데 효과적이지만, 설사의 근본적인 원인을 해결하지는 못합니다.
임상 경고: 연구에 따르면 카올린이 체액 균형을 교정하거나 이환 기간을 단축시키는 것으로 나타나지 않았습니다. 따라서 탈수 환자에게 적절한 수액 요법을 절대 대체해서는 안 됩니다.
임상 팁: 카올린은 위장관 진정 효과를 높이기 위해 종종 펙틴, 프로바이오틱스 또는 다른 흡착제(예: 비스무트 염 및 수산화알루미늄)와 같은 복합 제품으로 제형화됩니다.
작용 기전
Kaolin acts locally within the gastrointestinal tract as an adsorbent.
- It binds to water, toxins, and potentially enteropathogenic bacteria, preventing their systemic absorption and reducing fluid loss in the stool.
- It may also possess a mild antisecretory effect.
- Kaolin is not absorbed systemically → Excreted unchanged in the feces.

주의
Normal handling precautions should be observed.
Hydration Status: Does not correct fluid balance. Ensure the patient is adequately hydrated and consider concurrent fluid therapy if clinical signs of dehydration are present. Drug Spacing: Because of its adsorbent properties, kaolin should be administered at least 2 hours apart from other oral medications to prevent decreased absorption.

과다투여
Overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity since kaolin is not absorbed. However, excessive administration may lead to severe constipation or bowel impaction. Treatment is supportive, including discontinuation of the drug, hydration, and potentially mild laxatives if impaction occurs.
