개요
소마토트로핀(성장 호르몬, GH)은 뇌하수체 전엽에서 분비되는 펩타이드 호르몬입니다. 수의학에서 재조합 소 소마토트로핀(rbST)은 젖소의 우유 생산량을 늘리는 데 사용되었으며, 돼지 소마토트로핀은 돼지의 사료 효율과 근육 성장을 개선하는 데 사용됩니다. 소동물(개와 고양이)의 경우, 뇌하수체성 왜소증(성장 호르몬 결핍증)을 치료하기 위해 인간 재조합 성장 호르몬이 오프라벨로 간혹 사용됩니다.
임상 요점: 아미노산 서열의 종간 차이로 인해 인간 성장 호르몬은 개와 고양이에서 중화 항체 형성을 유발할 수 있으며, 이는 장기적인 효능을 제한할 수 있습니다. 가능하다면 개 성장 호르몬과 상동성이 높은 돼지 성장 호르몬을 사용하는 것이 치료에 더 적합합니다.
작용 기전
Somatotropin binds to specific cell surface receptors in target tissues (liver, bone, muscle, adipose).
- Direct effects: Stimulates lipolysis and inhibits glucose uptake, leading to increased blood glucose levels (diabetogenic effect).
- Indirect effects: Mediated primarily through the stimulation of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) production in the liver.
GH → Liver → IGF-1 release → Binds to IGF receptors → Promotes cellular proliferation, linear bone growth (at open epiphyseal plates), and protein synthesis.

주의
Important: Monitor blood glucose closely, as somatotropin is highly diabetogenic. Use with extreme caution in patients with a history of pancreatitis or those at risk for diabetes mellitus. In small animals, monitor for signs of acromegaly (broadening of facial features, increased interdental spaces, organomegaly) during prolonged therapy. GH therapy can also unmask underlying hypothyroidism.

과다투여
Acute overdose is unlikely to cause severe clinical signs other than transient hypoglycemia followed by hyperglycemia. Chronic overdosage leads to acromegaly and diabetes mellitus.
