개요
타우린은 베타 아미노산으로, 많은 포유류에서 '비필수'로 간주되지만 고양이에게는 절대적으로 필수적이며 특정 반려견 품종에게는 조건부 필수 영양소입니다.
- 고양이 건강: 고양이는 시스테인설핀산 탈탄산효소(CSAD) 활성이 낮고 담즙산 포합에 타우린을 의무적으로 사용하기 때문에 타우린을 충분히 합성하지 못합니다. 결핍 시 고양이 중심성 망막 변성(FCRD) 및 확장성 심근병증(DCM)을 유발합니다.

작용 기전
- Synthesis Pathway: Synthesized in vivo from methionine and cysteine via the enzyme cysteinesulfinic acid decarboxylase (CSAD) (a process requiring Vitamin B6).
- Bile Acid Conjugation: Crucial for fat digestion. Cats use taurine almost exclusively for this process, leading to obligate loss in feces.
- Cardiac Function: Modulates calcium flux across cell membranes → provides positive inotropic activity without altering the resting membrane potential, and modulates ionic currents.
- Neuromodulation: Stabilizes neuronal membranes and exerts a GABA-like inhibitory effect in the CNS, which may help raise the seizure threshold and reduce seizure activity.
- Platelet Function: Reduces platelet aggregation via calcium modulation.

Diagnostic Warning: While taurine is extremely safe, it should not be used as a substitute for adequate diagnosis of underlying cardiac, hepatic, or neurologic conditions.

- Clinical efficacy (improvement in cardiac function, seizure frequency, or hepatic markers)
- Taurine levels (whole blood levels preferable to plasma/serum levels; avoid hemolysis or collection of the buffy coat as it will negate the results)

Intracellular levels of taurine are much higher than in plasma.
배설
Excess taurine is rapidly excreted in the kidneys, but if a deficiency exists, urinary excretion is reduced via reabsorption.
과다투여
Toxic potential appears to be very low. No specific acute toxicity information is available, but massive overdoses are likely to be excreted renally without significant harm.
